Notes for Charles Godfrey | ||||||||||||
Started life as a messenger. Was still one in May 1860 was living in Conduit Street West as was Mary Elizabeth at time of mariage.(Living in Sin?) In 1865 a Charles Godfrey was the landlord of the Sovereign in Regents Park??? In1868 was a fruiterer Still one per Kelly's in 1870. Census April 1871 confirms family at Vernon's Head. (In 1865 William Walker was the landlord) On 27th April 1874 was a Licensed Victualler of the Vernon's Head 32 North Audley St. Hanover Square (building still there but not a pub any more). His will made at this time left everything to his wife Mary. Probate was granted to her on 25th August 1899. Census of 1881 confirms family still at Vernon's Head Electoral Roll of 1883 also confirms still there. In 1884 was a Licensed Victualler of 1 Westbourne Terrace Paddington. Family story is he had a pub near Royal Oak tube possibly the Stafford Hotel. Thomas Fenn had a package delivered there in December 1888. According to Publicans index the landlord of the Stafford was Frederick Smith perhaps a brother of James from 1860-1885. Kelly's Post Office Directories has him there from 1864-1916 which seems improbable???.It would appear that Westbourne Terrace contained Westbourne Villas which was the same address as the Stafford Hotel Was a well to do publican.
